A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is something that I recommend all my clients do, especially when we’re in the diagnostic phase and trying to figure out what’s causing your hypothyroidism.
But what the heck is it? And why do I think it’s so important?
I’d love to tell you!
First, the name fits the description: this test analyzes the mineral and metal levels in your body by looking at your hair.
You take a small sample of hair from the nape of your head (think: the area underneath the ponytail) and that gets sent into the lab.
Because of how our hair grows, the lab is then able to see a longer-term picture of what metals and minerals are in the body at a given time.
This is really important to understanding overall thyroid health because minerals have a huge impact on the thyroid.
There are certain minerals, such as calcium, where too much of it can slow the thyroid down. Others, like magnesium, can slow the thyroid down if there isn’t enough of it! Same thing with heavy metals, such as mercury or copper.
So, understanding where your levels are for each of these minerals and metals can help us not only understand what exactly is causing your thyroid to slow down, but it can help me work out a customized plan to help get your thyroid back to optimal health.
For example: If I see that your calcium levels are elevated, I might help make you a meal plan with magnesium-rich foods and maybe even a supplement, as magnesium can help manage excess calcium. But if your calcium levels show up within a good range, we would focus our attention on other things.
If your results all come back normal, then we know it’s not minerals or metals impacting your thyroid, and again, we can look for other causes and other solutions through different types of testing.

There are so many causes of hypothyroidism in women! Doing proper testing is really the only way to find out what’s really causing your symptoms and it’s the only way to create a proper treatment plan.
