Essential oils to use with hypothyroidism

I love incorporating essential oils into my daily routine, and not just because they smell amazing.

If you’re unfamiliar, essential oils are gently distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world.

While there isn't a significant amount of research to show a direct association between essential oils and thyroid health, there are some studies that indicate essential oils may help in a few different ways.

Here are four of my faves:

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is always at the top of my list, and there are a couple of different reasons.

First, it’s known to aid digestion and can also reduce nausea. If your metabolism is sluggish from an underactive thyroid, try adding food-grade peppermint to a cup of decaffeinated herbal tea each night. You can also add the essential oil to your diffuser or dilute it in a carrier oil (such as olive, avocado or jojoba oil) and massage it on your belly.

Next, peppermint oil can also help reduce stress. I love to dilute a couple of drops in a carrier oil, put it in my palms, rub my hands together, cup my nose and mouth, and take a huge breath. It’s so refreshing and really does help make me feel instantly more relaxed.

Myrrh Oil

I find that myrrh isn’t as generally popular as peppermint is, but don’t sleep on it because it really is a magical ingredient!

Myrrh can reduce inflammation and has antioxidant properties. This essential oil has been used for
ages as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Rubbing two or three drops of myrrh oil on the thyroid gland can help support your thyroid health and is especially beneficial when suffering from hypothyroidism.

Frankincense Oil

Frankincense oil is packed with anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and pain-relieving properties.

It is beneficial in improving skin disorders that are caused by a thyroid imbalance. It also helps protect the thyroid by destroying free radicals in the body. Again, mix a couple of drops of frankincense with a carrier oil and massage it over your thyroid to get the health benefits.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is definitely one of the more popular oils out there, and for a great reason.

Just like peppermint, lavender is great at relieving stress (which we know is a big factor in having a sluggish thyroid!). Try having a lavender diffuser on while you’re working, drop a little bit into your bath, or put a couple of drops on your pillow for a more restful sleep.

Before using any essential oil in relieving symptoms of a thyroid condition, always consult with your primary health provider or physician. It may also help to perform patch tests to ensure you aren’t allergic.

Angela Brown

Hi, I am Angela Brown. I wasn’t always as health-conscious as I am today. I’ve always had an interest in sports and working out, but living a healthy lifestyle was a battle for me. I didn’t eat the best and burned the candle at both ends. I became interested in the healthcare field in high school when I took my first anatomy class. It was then that I knew I wanted to pursue a career related to the body and how it functioned. After I graduated high school, I earned a degree in Physical Therapy. I worked in outpatient orthopedic and sports clinics for 8 years but at that point, I knew I wanted something more. I became certified in personal training and then went on to get certified in health coaching. My passion for nutrition and lifestyle change began to grow even more when I was struggling with my own health issues. I became certified in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition to get more answers for myself and to help my clients even gain control of their health. I have set out on a mission to help with women overcome hypothyroidism so they can lose weight and get their sexy back.
