Going gluten-free to support a healthy thyroid does not mean your meals are automatically going to be bland and boring.
There are so many delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free! Plus, companies these days have gotten so much better at creating grab-and-go snacks that are both gluten-free and delicious.
But as you’re planning your next trip to the grocery store, there are two things I want you to keep in mind:
Gluten free doesn’t mean healthy. When you’re reaching for pre-packaged snacks, use your discretion about serving size. Meaning, don’t eat the entire bag of chips in one sitting!
Pair your carbs with protein or fat. So if you have found a favorite gluten-free chip or cracker, for example, make sure you’re eating it with something high in protein or a good amount of fat. This will balance blood sugars and keep you fuller for longer.
With that, here are my, and the Sexy Thyroid Community’s, favorite gluten-free snacks. (PS - none of this is sponsored, I really do love these brands!)
Siete chips. The Churro Chips are a fantastic sweet snack, and I also love the Chipotle BBQ flavor. A good homemade guacamole or hummus is a perfect pairing with the savory option, and then have a small handful of almonds along with the sweet flavors to keep that balance.
Real Food From the Ground Up makes these amazing cauliflower potato chips. While most classic potato chips are also gluten free, these have other vegetables in them that make them a tiny bit healthier.
Apples and peanut butter or almond butter is always a great choice. The apples give you some great nutrients and fiber, and the peanut or almond butter add that extra fat and protein to help keep you feeling fuller for longer.
Epic’s Meat Bars are a great protein-heavy, gluten-free snack. I really like the beef and chicken varieties, but they also have bison, pork, and venison in all different flavors. While “meat bar” may not be the most appetizing name for them, it’s really just fancy jerky!
I am obsessed with Biena Chickpea Snacks. The roasted chickpeas pack a big crunch and a lot of flavor. And, chickpeas naturally have a good amount of protein, which is what you’re looking for in a thyroid-friendly snack.
Making roasted chickpeas yourself is super easy, too! Drain a can of chickpeas, toss them in a little bit of olive oil and your choice of seasoning, roast them for 20-30 minutes at 425 (tossing once in the middle for an even bake), and you’re good to go.
Continuing with chickpeas, I love a good hummus and veggie spread. Grab some carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, slice them up, and dip them in your favorite flavor of hummus. This is a super satisfying snack because you get the crunch of the vegetables along with the filling fiber and protein from the dip.
Coconut Yogurt is great for when you’re feeling like a sweet snack. I personally can’t have dairy and I don’t recommend it for a lot of women with hypothyroidism, but the So Delicious brand of coconut milk-based yogurt is an incredible alternative. They make small snack-packs and the bigger tubs, depending if you’re having it at home or on-the-go.
