The purpose of the thyroid gland is to create hormones, called T4 and T3, which manage our metabolism, amongst other bodily systems.
A part of this process requires the inactive T4 to be converted into active T3 so the body can use it. A large percentage of the inactive T4 travels through the bloodstream and gets converted to active T3. Do you know where this conversion happens?
The liver!
And, as many of you readers may know already, the liver is a powerful organ that does a lot, but its main function is to filter out toxins from the body. Those toxins can come from
the food we eat, the
water we drink, or our environment.
So, if your liver is bogged down by toxins, it may have difficulty converting your thyroid hormones, therefore impacting the function of the thyroid and the bodily systems it supports.
This is why liver health is so crucial for your thyroid health. Your thyroid symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, and anxiety could be because the liver is bogged down with toxins. The liver needs to be in top shape to help flush these toxins out so that the thyroid doesn't pay the price with less thyroid hormone conversion.
Many of the symptoms of a slow thyroid, such as weight gain, hair loss, feeling cold, depression and anxiety can be triggered by a bogged-down liver. So, if you’re feeling any of these symptoms of hypothyroidism, you may want to look at the level of toxins in your life.
One really common thing I see happen when the liver isn’t supporting thyroid hormone conversion is that women may develop goiters on their thyroids. So if you can physically see that your thyroid is enlarged, then you definitely need to check on your liver + thyroid function.
Chemicals and chemical overload can also induce an autoimmune response, which can lead to
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease. If you have symptoms of Hashimoto’s, a root cause may be the chemicals impacting your liver.
Now, while there are a lot of toxins around us that we can’t control, there are still a number of approaches you can take to remove toxins and better support your liver on your hypothyroidism journey.
First, you can complete a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis, which (amongst other things) tests the levels of heavy metals in your body. Heavy metals are some of the biggest concerns when we’re talking about toxins, so this is an incredibly important first step.
Next, you could complete an all-over detox for your thyroid health. I have an entire blog post dedicated to this,
here. And remember to
eat as clean and as organic as you can, and
drink filtered water.
And lastly, you could
get in touch with me. As a part of my services as a thyroid health coach, I will work with you to understand what areas of your life might be introducing the most toxins to your body, and work with you on a personalized plan to help get rid of them.
