Have you ever been told that your thyroid blood test results look normal, yet you still feel terrible?
I can count so many times when a doctor told me that my thyroid results were normal, but never even told me what they checked! It was so frustrating.
So many women are already struggling with
slow thyroid symptoms, like weight gain and fatigue, so not getting a full picture of why they’re having these symptoms can be very discouraging.
Usually when a woman goes to the doctor with these symptoms, the doctor will run a test checking her TSH levels. She might be told everything looks normal (even though she doesn’t
feel
normal) and then sent on her way.
Sound familiar? This is EXACTLY what happened to me.
Here’s the thing:
testing TSH levels isn’t enough. TSH levels don’t actually tell you what your thyroid is doing.
If they’re not testing the right things, then how can they help make you feel better?
And with that, the reference ranges the doctors use to judge what’s “normal” are not optimal, especially compared to the reference ranges that I see when people actually feel good.
So, what can you do if you’re told everything looks normal but things still don’t feel right?
First,
ask for a full thyroid panel.
A full thyroid panel will give a complete picture of how your thyroid is functioning. It looks at TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies.
These results will give a much better idea of what’s causing your symptoms and what your treatment plan should look like.
You can also do these tests yourself at home.
Reach out to me and I can help you with that.
Second, discuss reference ranges. Download
the Secret to Reading Your Thyroid Blood Test for details on what reference ranges are and how to talk to your doctor about them. You can also watch
this video on how to read your thyroid blood test.
Third, if your doctor still isn’t listening to you, it might be time to find a new healthcare providor. This is what I had to do over and over and over again until I
finally found someone who would listen to me. They did the testing I asked for, they helped me figure out a great treatment plan, and finally I was on the path to feeling like myself again.
My biggest advice: don’t give up.
If you feel like things aren’t normal, keep speaking up, keep advocating for yourself until you get the answers.
Everyone deserves to feel their best. That includes you.
