Someone who suffers from hypothyroidism absolutely knows that eating foods that aren't "clean" and "healthy" will make them feel pretty miserable and even cause weight gain.
There are so many fad diets, books, and advice regarding what to eat to stay healthy. But eating for your thyroid is a complex thing! There is NO such thing as a cookie-cutter approach!
Remember that you’re an individual. What’s working for your cousin, your best friend, or even someone else in the Sexy Thyroid Community may not work for you.
With that, the one thing everyone with a slow thyroid does need to do is
eat clean.
When it comes to thyroid function, the thyroid can get really bogged down when it’s fed crap food.
The thyroid is a master gland that controls a lot of functions in the body. One of the things it controls is the metabolism.
If one of your goals is weight loss - and I know for many of you, this is something that’s really important - well, weight loss won’t happen if the metabolism is out of whack, which can happen when the thyroid is bogged down because of a crappy diet.
Some main ingredients that I’d like to see you
remove from your diet are refined sugars, gluten, soy, and alcohol.
On top of that, it’s really important to focus on eating a lot of vegetables and getting good, clean sources of protein. Here’s a blog post with a detailed list of
great foods for your thyroid.
Speaking of protein, your thyroid actually needs a lot of it! And many people aren’t getting enough protein in their diets, especially if they aren’t focused on clean, balanced eating.
This is why when you’re managing hypothyroidism, it’s way more important to count macronutrients (carbs, protein, fats) instead of counting calories. I have an entire YouTube video that dives into this, so if you’re not sure what macro counting is,
click here to watch that video.
Then, the types of macronutrients you’re eating are just as important as
how much
of them you’re eating.
Take carbs, for example.
Carbs have such a bad reputation, but they’re SO important to proper thyroid function! Low-carb diets may help kick-start some weight loss, but I’ve never seen anyone be successful with them in the long term when they also have hypothyroidism. If you already have a slow thyroid and then take carbohydrates out of your diet, you can make the thyroid dysfunction even worse. So don’t go low carb!
But the catch is that you need to be eating the
right kind of carbs. The best carbohydrates are starchy ones with lots of fiber that will stabilize the blood sugar, release slowly into the body, and keep you full longer. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, oats, whole fruit, gluten-free bread, etc.
So, how do you know what foods you need in your diet to help your individual thyroid?
You can keep a
food diary for a month or two to track how you’re feeling and figure out your sensitivities.
You can do a
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis to see if there are any minerals that you need more or less of in your diet.
Then, you can work with me to find your ideal
macro ratio and meal plan!
Eating when you have hypothyroidism can be a really complicated, challenging process. Please never hesitate to reach out and ask questions if you have them!
