Moisturizers and serums, peels, laser treatments, botox, hair coloring… many women today (myself included!) take a proactive approach to ageing and have no problem investing a good amount of our budget to make ourselves look better.
But when it comes to our health, it often feels like the opposite.
Many of us take a reactive approach to health - only focusing on it when something’s wrong. And even when that does happen, we often look for the fastest and least expensive fix.
Let’s say you dye your hair every 4 months. You get a nice cut and a beautiful full head of highlights. That can be upwards of $200-300 per treatment; $600-900 a year. That’s not an insignificant investment.
Would you spend that same amount on exercise equipment, a healthy eating program, or functional medical testing?
A comment I hear from a number of women is that they are not ready to invest time and money into their thyroid health right now. They’ll wait for a better time.
Now, I absolutely don’t think there’s anything wrong with spending your disposable time and money on the things that bring you joy.
But what I do think is wrong is the mindset that so many of us have about our health.
It seems that we don’t value it, that our health is the least important thing, that it’s not worth it to spend the time or money.
But why?
When we’re healthy, when our minds and bodies are working the way they should, it means:
And in the long run… it’s cheaper.
This is an incredibly fascinating article by researchers at Rutgers University that breaks down the financial impact of improved health behaviors. Some of this might be hard to read, as the findings are blunt - but they are also (hopefully) motivating.
For example, the study found that “inactivity has been estimated to cost between $670 to $1,125 per person per year.” In theory, you could do free workouts off of YouTube with as little as a yoga mat (which will set you back, oh, $20-30 or so). A small time investment each week that could save you over $1,000 a year!
And yes, this is absolutely coming from a place of privilege. Many Americans are unable to afford the financial burden of health care. But if you have the means, why not invest in yourself and your future?
