We tell ourselves stories all the time. It is like there is an ongoing narrative on repeat in our minds that our actions seem to follow.
What I have noticed, though, is the narrative is often full of self-limiting beliefs. Self-limiting beliefs are the ideas or stories we believe about ourselves that seem to hold us down or limit us in what we believe about ourselves or what we might attempt to do with our lives.
We all have self-limiting beliefs and mindset blocks but the key is what we do with them when they start to dominate our narrative.
I have found this to be so true when dealing with health issues. And I see it so commonly in women who are dealing with a slow thyroid.
If you can get your mindset into a good position, it makes the healing journey so much easier.
Here are some of the common mindset blocks that I see both in myself and in my clients as we all work on our own health journies.
1.Thinking you’ll never get better
I hear this from a lot of women. Especially those that have been on this hypothyroid journey for a while. Especially those who have been denied proper testing and medication from conventional doctors. Especially those who feel like they’re just not being heard.
It took me 10 years to get diagnosed! So I know what it’s like to get frustrated and depressed when you feel like you just won’t get better. This thought ran through my head over, and over, and over again.
2.Being afraid of feeling better
Now, this might not be something that you are actively saying to yourself, but it’s certainly a feeling that often creeps up subconsciously.
One of the big reasons is because you’ve been living so long feeling this way that you might not remember what it feel like to be yourself anymore. And that unknown can feel scary.
3.Thinking that you’ve failed
It’s so common to get into a rut and feel like you’ve failed. Again, this is a thought that was stuck in my head for a very long time. I get it.
Feeling like you can’t get your thyroid back on track, or like you just can’t find energy or lose weight. When your health is stuck and doesn’t seem to be making any progress, it can feel like it’s your own fault… but it’s not.
This is a really personal thing. Each of us responds differently to different mental health strategies.
So, again, because I was there and I know what it’s like to have my mindset get in the way of my healing, I’m going to share with you some of the things that helped get me out of my funk.
First, affirmations.
Pick something that you can say to yourself every day, first thing in the morning, that is going to start your mindset off in the right way.
This could be something positive or motivating. It could be something you just make up or a short, memorable quote you found online.
I wrote down a list of affirmations on a piece of paper that I kept on my nightstand. Every morning that I got up, I read it to myself. I got to the point where I didn’t even need the paper anymore.
It went like this: “My thyroid is healing. My thyroid is healthy. My thyroid is happy. I’m healing.”
Figure out what resonates with you, something you can say over and over again. And then put it out into the world!
Was my thyroid actually happy every morning that I said this affirmation? Probably not. But when I started my day with these thoughts, I really did feel better.
Next, find your why.
Why are you doing this? Why are you trying to heal your thyroid?
Don’t just say “to feel better”.
Why do you want to feel better? Why do you
need
to feel better?
Do you want to do better at your job? Do you want to be more confident in your body? Do you want more energy to spend time with your family? Do you want to feel a sense of accomplishment every day?
Of
course you want to feel better! But really defining that
why can be so positive and motivating.
Finally, envision life with a healthy thyroid.
Answer this question: What would life look like if you had a healthy, happy thyroid?
What would you do then that you can’t do now?
This was the #1 thing for me that really brought my mindset back around. Truly envisioning my life and putting it out into the universe.
And let me tell you something… it worked.
Having a positive mindset helped motivate me to make the lifestyle changes I needed to help my thyroid. It helped me gain the confidence I needed to stand up for myself when doctors said there was nothing wrong. It really helped me heal my thyroid.
