One of the most common symptoms of a slow thyroid in women is weight gain and/or the inability to lose weight. It’s probably the top reason most of my clients reach out to me in the first place!
Now, losing weight is an okay goal to have. But before we dive into what that might look like, I think it’s really important for you to stop and reflect on
why you want to lose weight.
Is it because you
think you should be skinnier? Or that you’ve seen someone else lose weight and you want to do what they’re doing?
A thin body isn’t inherently healthy, and a larger body isn’t inherently unhealthy. But, comparing ourselves to other people… that’s what can be really bad for us.
Every person’s body is so unique. Not just in terms of shape, size, color… whatever, but also in terms of how your body interacts with things like food, stress, the environment, and more.
The same is true for your thyroid. The reason your thyroid is getting in the way of weight loss might be completely different than mine and others within the Sexy Thyroid Community. You might have the exact same diagnosis and be on the same thyroid medication as someone else, but your results can be completely different.
This is what makes not only our hypothyroidism but our overall health so complicated: we’re all so individual.
So, if weight loss is a goal for you as you’re on your hypothyroidism journey, it’s really important to figure out what’s going to work best for you, your lifestyle, your body, and your thyroid, to help you reach your goals.
But with that, it’s also really important to not
only focus on weight loss! If that’s all you care about, you’re really at risk of doing more harm than good and making your hypothyroidism worse.
If you’re constantly obsessing over your weight, this could be putting your body into a stress response.
Stress is a major trigger for a slow thyroid, and that slow thyroid will lead to more weight gain.
If you’re
cutting too many calories, your body might decide to keep the weight on because it thinks it’s starving.
Instead, it’s best if you focus on actually healing your thyroid.
Do your
thyroid testing to find out what’s causing your thyroid to slow down.
Focus on eating clean, reducing stress, exercising properly, removing toxins, get your hormones on track, and getting on the right
thyroid medication (if you need it).
When your thyroid starts to heal and your body is ready for it, the weight will start to come off. There’s not going to be a quick fix, but we should be focused on long-term health anyways.
This is what will put you on a path to healthy, sustainable weight loss.
